Imagine this: You wake up, and you feel kind of blah. You don’t want to do anything….and no way you are doing anything hard.   But then, you move your body….maybe it’s a workout, a run, or even just dancing around. Suddenly, you feel better. That’s your brain saying, “Thanks for the workout!”

When you train your body, you’re not just building muscles…you’re building your brain, too.

Let’s talk about how:

When you exercise, your brain gets a hit of something called dopamine. That’s a chemical that makes you feel good, like when you eat your favorite snack or hear a funny joke. But the more you work for your dopamine, the greater the reward.

This dopamine boost helps you:

  • Feel happier.
  • Focus better on stuff you need to do.
  • Handle stress like a pro.

Think of it as a reward for moving your body. It’s your brain’s way of saying, “Keep it up big dog!”

Here’s the cool part: Training doesn’t just make you feel good in the moment..it makes you stronger on the inside.

Every time you show up, even when it’s hard, you’re building something called discipline. Discipline is like a secret superpower. It helps you:

  • Do hard things, even when you don’t feel like it.
  • Stick to your goals, no matter what.
  • Feel proud of yourself for showing up.Imagine planting a tree. At first, it’s small, but if you water it every day, it grows into something strong and amazing. Training is like that.
    • Today, you get the happy brain boost (dopamine).
    • Tomorrow, you’ve built habits that make life easier.
    • In the future, you’ll have a strong body and a strong mind

“No man is free who is not master of himself.” – Epictetus

That quote from Epictetus the former slave and one of the most well-known Stoics is about as clear as it gets. Discipline is the bridge that connects you to everything you could want, and helps you steer clear of the things that can destroy you.  It is the cornerstone to Self-Mastery and personal development. We must attack developing this trait from all angles.

Training hard, pushing yourself, and abstaining from poor food choices and bodily choices helps develop your discipline muscle. We are tempted day in and day out for quick hits of dopamine. These normally are things that don’t pay off. Instead, they rob you of your growth.  They comfort you for a short time, masking what needs to be done.

This is why training is the perfect grounds to grow mentally and physically stronger and sharper.

Training isn’t just about looking good or being fit. It’s about becoming someone who can handle life’s challenges. It’s about proving to yourself, over and over, that you’re stronger than your excuses.

This is what Stoic Gainz is all about.
– Building discipline.
– Building your body.
– Building resilience.
– Building muscle.
– Building brain power.

You picking up on the theme yet?

It’s about BUILDING.

We aren’t just working out to look good and perform better. We are testing and molding ourselves daily.  There are plenty of days you won’t feel like it.  But there won’t be any day that you leave out of the gym saying “Damn, I shouldn’t have gotten this amazing workout in!”

Now this leads me to another point..we are TRAINING. Not just exercising.  You may be asking yourself what’s the difference?

Let’s break that down:

What Is Exercise?

Exercise is movement that makes you feel good right now. It’s like hitting “refresh” on your brain and body.

  • You go for a jog because it’s sunny outside.
  • You join a yoga class because you want to relax.
  • You lift weights just to burn off some energy.

The goal of exercise is simple: feel better in the moment. There’s no long-term plan—just move your body and enjoy.

Training = Discipline

What Is Training?

Training is movement with a purpose. It’s not just about today….it’s about building something for tomorrow.

  • You follow a plan to get stronger, faster, or healthier over time.
  • Every session has a goal, like lifting heavier weights, running a faster mile, or mastering a new skill.
  • You’re working toward a specific result, like completing a marathon or improving your health.

The goal of training is growth. It’s about showing up, even when it’s tough because you’re working toward something bigger. You get all the mental boosts like dopamine and serotonin boosts when you train, but even more so because you are constantly breaking new records and pushing new heights.  It’s like playing a video game and crushing your record..mental fireworks going off everywhere.

Key Differences

Exercise Training
About feeling good today About improving for tomorrow
No specific plan Follows a structured plan
Based on mood or fun Based on goals and progress
Short-term focus Long-term mindset

Why Training Wins in the Long Run

Exercise is awesome. It keeps you moving and feeling good. But if you want to grow stronger, build discipline, and achieve big goals, training takes you further.

  • Exercise is a mood boost. Training is transformation.
  • Exercise is fun. Training is fulfilling.
  • Exercise gets you through the day. Training changes your life.

When you train, every session builds on the last one. You’re creating a foundation of strength, confidence, and resilience that makes you unstoppable.

Where to Start

You don’t have to choose one or the other right away. Start by asking yourself:

  • Do I want to feel good right now? That’s exercise.
  • Do I want to become stronger, faster, or more disciplined? That’s training.

Both are important. But if you want to create the best version of yourself, start thinking long-term. Start training. In a previous blog post I covered how your nutrition habits is one of the best ways to test and develop your discipline. You can read that article HERE.

So the next time you feel blah, remember this:

Move your body today to build a better you tomorrow.
